Probably the most useful application of the laws of mechanics is the study
of situations in which nothing moves--this discipline is known as statics.
The principles of statics are employed by engineers whenever they design
stationary structures, such as buildings,
bridges, and tunnels, in order to ensure that these
structures do not collapse.
