Physics 387K: Classical Electromagetism
The
aim of Physics 387K is to enable the student to achieve a thorough understanding
of classical electromagnetism
The majors texts for the course are Classical electrodynamics
(2nd edition) by
J.D. Jackson and Classical electricity and magnetism (2nd edition) by
W.K. Panofsky and M. Phillips.
The course will attempt to
cover three main areas: i) The reletivistically invariant
formulation of the laws of electromagnetism: ii) The effect of
dielectric and magnetic materials on electric and magnetic
fields: iii) The generation, propogation, scattering, and diffraction
of electromagnetic waves.
Grade: 25% homework, 25% midterm exam.,
50% final exam.
